Routine exam of a patient with lower back and hip pain.
Routine AP and Lateral projections of the patient's lumbar spine were taken to assess cause of pain.
Radiographs showed mild lateral curvature of the lumbar spine with little spondylotic changes and minimal decrease in intervertebral disc space heights.
Attention should be drawn to the AP projection which demonstrated artifactual variation in radiographic density consistent with grid cut off. An inverted focused stationary grid resulted in this effect.
